Medical experts provide tips on how to avoid, manage seasonal sickness

Seasonal sicknesses are starting to rear their heads as kids head back to school and autumn approaches.

Medical experts with LECOM were hoping to get a head start on viral respiratory infections by hosting a flu vaccine clinic last week and encouraging more people to get the annual shot.

Respiratory infections spread when people are in close quarters thanks to water droplets sent into the air when someone coughs, sneezes, talks or laughs.

“We see a general spike in all of the respiratory and other viral illnesses as people spend more time indoors. That way their exposure risk is much greater,” said Jason Turba, a pharmacist with LECOM Health. “The common cold, influenza, and RSV… many of those symptoms are going to be very similar, so you can’t just tell by symptoms what the infection is. If it becomes severe, you need to contact your primary care physician.”…
