PennDOT officials said in order to stay safe, drivers should buckle up, stay attentive and travel at safe speeds. They also caution drivers to remember to have their headlights on and to never drive when impaired.

Saxon Daugherty, PennDOT District 1 Safety Officer, said, “The important thing is to slow down, but you never want to try to swerve into the other lane to avoid hitting a deer because that’s going to put not only yourself in danger but other people that are traveling on the road in danger. So sometimes deer are just going to be hit because obviously we can’t control deer movement and behavior, but there are things that you can do to minimize the impact and to keep yourself safe.”
