New on-ramp gates going up on Interstates 79, 90

PennDOT is taking steps to ensure interstate safety during emergency situations, and the construction has already begun.

PennDOT is making progress in installing on-ramp gates along interchanges on Interstates 79 and 90.

Currently, PennDOT has four gates installed, two in West County near Girard and two out in North East near the New York state line.

One spokesperson said the goal is to prevent drivers from getting on or off the highways during heavy snowfall or severe accidents to both keep drivers safe and help incident management.

“Typically, in the past, we would have first responders or PennDOT crews manning that segment of roadway to make sure no traffic gets on. Now, they’re just going to encounter that gate, so they’ll have to just continue ahead and find another exit to safely get off,” said Saxon Daugherty, the PennDOT safety press officer…
