New exhibit honors Erie’s Polish heritage

The Hagen History Center opened a new exhibit on Wednesday that explores Erie’s Polish roots.

The exhibit contains historic artifacts, including those from Erie’s four Polish parishes, and is called “The Story of Us, Erie Polonia: Churches and Neighborhoods.”

The curator is Bobby Sulecki, who was born and raised in Erie and says he is 100% Polish. His grandmother, who immigrated from Poland, sparked his interest in his heritage, and he has been researching ever since her passing.

He explained the importance of keeping history alive.

“It’s something nobody really talks about, and I feel a lot of people don’t know this history, even Polish people don’t know this stuff,” Sulecki said. “And I just think it gives people a window into somebody else’s culture and history, because a lot of these things here, quite frankly, if I didn’t rescue them, they would’ve just been thrown out.”…
