‘The need is overwhelming’ St. Martin Center reports twice as many families seeking food

(WJET/WFXP)– SNAP benefits are set to expire Saturday at midnight, and as the deadline draws closer with no idea of when they’ll be restored, the St. Martin Center said they’ve seen a rapid increase in families seeking food assistance and are asking the community for their help.

In just the past week, the St. Martin Center said they’ve seen the number of families coming to their food pantry double, and despite their efforts, it is putting a serious strain on their resources.

The center’s CEO called the need for help overwhelming as they try to make sure no one goes hungry, with the center adding that they may have to start rationing food or reduce portion sizes to keep offering help.

“The need is overwhelming,” said David González, Chief Executive Officer. “People who have never had to ask for help before are now showing up at our doors. They’re scared, they’re hungry, and they’re doing their best to get by.”

Hours have already been reduced at the St. Martin Center Food Pantry back at the start of September to be closed on Fridays. They’re now asking the community to help out in any way, be it volunteering, food donations or just getting the word out…
