Steelhead run better than last year as work begins to rear more fish

As the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) works to produce more steelhead and brown trout in Erie, this year’s fishing opportunities have been better than last year.

“Last year, the opportunities were very limited for people looking for steelhead,” said Tim Wilson, the agency’s area fisheries manager in northwestern Pennsylvania. “Most of the fish were near the mouth (of Lake Erie.) The water was low and clear. Fishing was rather difficult.”

“So, this year was better. It still stayed warm for a while. It still stayed dry for a while, but eventually we did get quite a few rain events in October and November. And so each one of those rain events brought in pretty decent numbers of fish. Angler use has been high…
