Frostbitten pelican rescued by Tamarack Wildlife Center dies

A pelican that found its way to Erie over the last few weeks, unfortunately, passed away Wednesday night at the Tamarack Animal Care Shelter.

The brown pelican was estimated to be a two-year old female based on its molt pattern and size. She was admitted critically underweight and suffering from second-degree frostbite and wounds on both feet.

The executive director for Tamarack Wildlife Center saud when they receive animals in this condition, they try to examine them quickly but efficiently.

“Handling time equals trauma, so we need to, especially with a delicate patient, we need to do a very quick exam. Prioritize what care it needs and then let it rest,” said Carol Holmgren, executive director for the Tamarack Wildlife Center
