Recent rescue by Humane Society prompts winter care guide for outdoor cats

(WJET/WFXP)– Winter in Erie can be unforgiving, even for outdoor cats who still need care. That’s the Erie Humane Society’s message after recently taking in a severely ill cat suffering from several health issues and signs of frostbite.

Olive, a six-year-old cat, was brought to the Humane Society by a good Samaritan and was described as “a true hot mess” who was skin and bone while suffering from an upper respiratory infection and showing signs of frostbite. They also added that had she not been rescued, she likely could not have survived another night out on her own.

While the Humane Society said she’s warm and recovering, they also offered some advice to the community on how small efforts can make a huge difference for cats who still need help, even if they’re comfortable being outside, especially seniors, kittens, or cats battling illness or injury.

First and foremost, building a quick DIY shelter can be a lifesaver and can be done for less than $50 using items like old plastic bins, Styrofoam for insulation, and straw instead of blankets to keep them warm while repelling any moisture. They also have their own guide for putting one together available here.
