‘Santa’s Helpers’ – Group of retirees build nearly 2,500 handmade toys for children

Hidden behind the humming machines and red bricks of the AJAX/CECO/Erie Press manufacturing plant on West 12th Street sits a holiday workshop that Santa himself would envy.

Throughout the year, a group of about 20 retirees called “Santa’s Helpers” practice their woodworking passion by crafting hand-made toys, turning their small garage into a full-fledged toy workshop.

“Our mission is to make toys for the less fortunate in the city and the surrounding area,” said Larry Schroeck, toymaker. “This year, we gave out already almost 2,500 toys.”…
