Erie School Board to revisit decision turning city high schools to middle schools

In 2017, the Erie School District voted to turn East High School and Strong Vincent High School into middle schools amid budget issues, but now, a school board member is looking to revisit that decision.

“We didn’t do it with thought or preparation or any kind of study about the educational impact, we just didn’t have the time. We were just under the gun. Now that the circumstances have eased a little bit, and they’re not over with, if they continue to ease, would we make that same decision? I don’t know. I don’t think so. I wouldn’t, and I was there at the time,” said John Harkins, Erie School Board Member.

Harkins said they were left with limited, undesirable choices back when they made the decision, and he’s asking the board to consider a study into the educational benefits and drawbacks of the switch.
