The Erie Bureau of Police has cited one of its officers in a Sept. 12 traffic accident at West 11th and Sassafras streets that led to the death of another motorist.
Shawn Stafford, 55, faces summary counts of careless driving-unintentional death and failure to stop at a red signal in the accident that led to the death of 41-year-old Matthew Zaborowski, who was driving the vehicle Stafford is accused of hitting with his patrol vehicle. A bystander in the area of the crash was also injured, suffering a broken leg, authorities reported previously.
The citations against Stafford, who was sworn in as an Erie police officer in January 2019, were filed Feb. 6 before Erie 3rd Ward District Judge Alison Scarpitti. Each summary violation carries a fine plus court costs, with a $500 fine on the careless driving-unintentional death charge and a $25 fine for the red light violation, according to information in the citations…
