Recent winter storms demonstrated the raw power of Lake Erie’s storm surges. Winds gusting up to 80 miles per hour across the lake pushed massive water volumes toward the eastern end, creating rapid rises in water levels.[2]
These events, known as seiches, caused water to recede dramatically on the western Ohio shoreline while flooding areas near Buffalo, New York. The lake’s shallow depth – averaging just 62 feet – makes it particularly vulnerable to such wind-driven shifts.[3]…
