Since 1850 – City of Erie designates Erie Cemetery as historic site

Sitting behind the iron gates in the city’s Little Italy is the resting place for thousands of Erie residents – from soldiers who fought in the War of 1812 to the modern Erieites who knew the city as we see it today.

Established in 1850, Erie Cemetery holds a gravestone for every era of Erie’s history, and Wednesday night, Erie City Council voted to officially designate the cemetery as a historic site.

“This has been a long time coming. It’s something we didn’t think we would easily be given because cemeteries are not usually thought of with historical status, and yet, where else is the history? All the people who are deceased are buried here with us,” said Betsy Mackrell, Manager of Business Development at Erie Cemetery…
