Sitting behind the iron gates in the city’s Little Italy is the resting place for thousands of Erie residents – from soldiers who fought in the War of 1812 to the modern Erieites who knew the city as we see it today.
Established in 1850, Erie Cemetery holds a gravestone for every era of Erie’s history, and Wednesday night, Erie City Council voted to officially designate the cemetery as a historic site.
“This has been a long time coming. It’s something we didn’t think we would easily be given because cemeteries are not usually thought of with historical status, and yet, where else is the history?
