Erie police officer was cited in fatal crash. Victim’s family is upset

The family of Matthew “Matty” Zaborowski believes the legal system has failed them in holding responsible the person who caused a Sept. 12 traffic accident at West 11th and Sassafras in Erie that cost the 41-year-old city man his life.

That person, Erie police charge in two traffic citations filed in early February, is one of the police’s own.

Erie police on Feb. 4 filed summary traffic citations against Shawn Stafford, 55, a police sergeant and seven-year member of the Erie Bureau of Police, for careless driving-unintentional death and for failure to stop at a red signal for his accused actions in the accident. Investigators accuse him of failing to stop for a red light while traveling south on Sassafras Street as he responded to a call with his patrol vehicle’s lights activated, but without its siren on…
