Update: Southern Erie placed under a winter storm watch until Wednesday morning – could see 9 inches of snow

The National Weather Service released a winter storm watch at 2:28 a.m. on Monday valid from 8 p.m. until Wednesday 8 a.m. for Southern Erie.

“Heavy lake effect snow possible. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 9 inches possible. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph,” explains the weather service. “Rain showers will change to snow showers this afternoon, with bands of locally heavy lake effect snow expected to develop tonight as arctic air moves into the region. The lake effect snow will persist into Tuesday night before gradually tapering off. The snowfall amounts will depend on the placement and duration of the most persistent snow bands. In addition, west winds will continue to gust to 35 to 45 mph at times tonight and Tuesday morning leading to blowing snow and poor visibility where the bands persist.”

“Plan on slippery conditions with slower travel likely The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches,” states the weather service. “Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation.”
