SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — A former Fairview Township tax collector has been sentenced to federal prison after admitting to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in public funds.
Karen McGinnis, 46, of Mountain Top, was sentenced March 17 to 20 months behind bars by a federal judge in Scranton. She was convicted of embezzling money collected from local property taxes.
Prosecutors say that between March 2023 and January 2025, McGinnis was responsible for collecting taxes for Fairview Township, Luzerne County, and the Crestwood School District. During that time, she diverted more than $400,000 for personal use…
