Officials Share Progress On Chautauqua Lake Study

Mayville, NY — Local leaders and scientists will share new information this weekend from an ongoing five-year study focused on the health of Chautauqua Lake.

The 2026 Chautauqua Lake Symposium will bring together researchers, county officials and local organizations involved in lake management and study efforts. The focus remains on a long-term project aimed at better understanding water quality, aquatic vegetation and overall lake conditions.

“We are not going to control the lake, we just want to manage it in certain spots,” said PJ Wendel Jr., Chautauqua County Executive. “Last year we had an outbreak of elodea, which is native to Chautauqua Lake and many other lakes across the state, but we want to make sure all of that is limited, and that this is a really usable lake, not only for fishing but for recreation and relaxation too.”…
