Rising Gas Prices Impact on Travel Sports

Families may be hitting the road on Sunday after a weekend full of cheer, dance, and competition at the Erie Insurance Arena, for the Champion Cheer Central Competition. But with gas prices climbing above $4 a gallon, some parents are taking a closer look at the cost of travel sports.

Families from across the region packed the arena for the Champion Cheer Central competition, bringing energy and excitement to downtown Erie.

As fuel costs continue to rise, many parents said they’re thankful for events closer to home. “Whether we fly or drive to competitions, gas prices or flights, it really comes into effect. We’ve noticed it a lot this year, but you do for your kids whatever you can do,” said Heidi Friend of Pittsburgh.

For some families, travel sports are a way of life. But that doesn’t mean rising costs aren’t felt. “We have no choice, we’re kind of in it,” said Jacqueline Dudt-Mulzet of Pittsburgh, PA, “But it does impact how we plan with friends and how we do other things, like meals and hanging out, maybe a little more economically than usual.”…
