Legislation introduced to stop price gouging at the pump in PA

(WJET/WFXP) — With gas prices skyrocketing in the past several weeks, one Pennsylvania state representative has introduced a bill that would prevent companies from increasing prices more than once a day.

State Rep. Ryan Bizzarro (D-Erie) introduced what he called the End Gas Price Gouging Act, which he said would not allow gas price increases within 24 hours of each other, outlaw increases during emergencies, while allowing the Attorney General to investigate and prosecute price gouging.

Known as H.B. 2383, the bill is co-sponsored by 16 other Democrats and no Republicans and would amend the 2006 Price Gouging Act by adding more definitions to price gouging and banning price-gouging petroleum products.

Bizzarro cited the rapid increase in gas prices caused by the war with Iran, with the average price for a gallon of gas jumping 80 cents in the past year to $4.15 on average across the commonwealth and $4.29-$4.39 in Erie County, and that price increases only hurt Pennsylvanians already struggling with other costs of living…
