Protecting Presque Isle’s wetlands – Nonprofit seeks to eliminate invasive species

Wetlands make up more than half of the land on Presque Isle State Park, with dozens of different plant and animal species calling them home.

Because those wetlands support endangered species and recreation, they have been nationally designated as “priority wetlands,” and to protect those areas, the Regional Science Consortium launched its “Wetland Restoration Project” over decade ago, and their work continues today.

“We have been looking at the wetlands, removing invasive plant species. Not all plant species are good. These invasive plants create monocultures and take over the landscape where other animals can’t live there, so then you start to lose a diversity of animals as well,” said Jeanette Schnars, Executive Director of the Regional Science Consortium…
