(WJET/WFXP)– Spring has fully sprung, which means that ebikes will soon be out on the roads more. With that, the City of Erie released a reminder for anyone eager to get a ride on their ebike of the laws around them.
Just like a regular bicycle, ebikes don’t need a license to be driven, but in their reminder, the city listed different requirements and regulations to keep in mind for the bike not to be considered a motorcycle.

Three requirements that ebikes need to meet include having a max speed of 20 mph, the motor must have an output of 750 watts or less and weigh 100 lbs or less. Anything more, and the city said they could be considered a motorcycle and thus, require a license.
When ebikes go beyond those limits, the city said anyone driving them could be cited for having an unregistered vehicle, no inspection, license, or insurance, and could be towed, along with any other traffic violations…
