Lane County to settle first tax foreclosure lawsuit

Lane County commissioners agreed to pay $240,289 to settle the first two of what could be many claims coming from the county’s prior tax foreclosure process which the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled unconstitutional.

According to the legal complaint, in 2019, Lane County foreclosed on Vincent and Elsa Lopez’ Eugene home over $13,409 in unpaid taxes. The county then resold the home at auction to a real estate agent for $81,000 with no compensation to the Lopezes.

In 2022, the county did the same to the late Rick Hayes. The county foreclosed on his Eugene home which had $11,822 of unpaid taxes and resold it for $161,200 without compensating Hayes’ daughters…
