An unexpected gift: 35,000 pounds of food arrive in Eugene from Utah

Canned food, spaghetti and liquid dish soap were among the items Food for Lane County received as 35,281 pounds of nonperishable food and household supplies made their way from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints storehouses in Salt Lake City to Eugene.

The truckload was driven from Utah to Eugene this week and arrived on the morning of Aug. 20, in an unexpected shipment that came together in the last few weeks.

“We’ve been really blessed that the church feels the need and desire to give back to the community, and this is one way that they’ve been supporting us,” said Dawn Marie Woodward, events and media relations coordinator for Food for Lane County.

While the church has regularly delivered truckloads of food to Food for Lane County, they typically come every six to nine months, said Rachel Andersen, the communications manager for the Eugene stake of local congregations…
