EUGENE, Ore. – The City of Eugene is making major changes to a busy and deadly stretch of Patterson Street aimed at reducing speeding and fatal crashes.
The changes follow the tragic death of Erick Njue, a 30-year-old University of Oregon graduate student, who was struck and killed on Jan. 25 while trying to cross the street on a bicycle.
The future plans for Patterson include one lane of traffic from 20th to 24th Ave, parking on either side and a designated bike lane. Residents say the current two-lane layout leads to drivers going well over the 25-mile-per-hour speed limit…
