SEIU votes to authorize potential Sept. 28 strike; what’s next

Service Employees International Union local 503, which represents classified staff at Oregon’s seven public universities, voted to authorize a Sept. 28 strike with an overwhelming majority of 97% ‘yes’ votes.

“Administrators (are) walking around on this campus making more than six figures, meanwhile our employees cannot even really afford rent. We continue to bargain but overwhelmingly our members said that if we can’t keep up with the cost of inflation we will have to strike” Melissa Unger, SEIU’s statewide executive director, said.

If union leaders and university management don’t reach an agreement this week, the University of Oregon could see a strike coincide with the beginning of fall term…
