Oregon head coach Dan Lanning is building a national championship contender in Eugene but reflected on his time at Alabama under head coach Nick Saban.
Lanning joined the Ryen Russillo Podcast and discussed his biggest learning experience under Saban in Tuscaloosa.
“I’ve never been more impressed with the consistency of a coach than Coach Saban,” Lanning said. “Just watching him every day, it was almost robotic how well he was able to move, but robotic and adaptable. There are a lot of people that have come from his tree. Some have had a lot of success and some have not.
I feel like the ones that maybe haven’t had as much success, tried to be Nick. You know, Nick was Nick. You know, Nick, Coach Saban was himself every day and that’s something I appreciate and learned from him that whenever you get your opportunity, you’ve got to be you. But you’ve got to be the definition of consistency if you want to last in this profession.”
Lanning was a graduate assistant under Saban at Alabama during the 2015 season. The Crimson Tide defeated Clemson in the CFP National Championship that season. He left Alabama to be the inside linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Memphis under Mike Norvell. He also served as the defensive coordinator under Kirby Smart at Georgia before taking the head coaching job at Oregon.
