Man accused of stabbing victim nine times arrested; victim hospitalized

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Springfield police arrested and jailed a man on January 21 who allegedly stabbed another man nine times, according to the Springfield Police Department. SPD officials said they responded shortly after 10 a.m. on January 21 to a reported stabbing in progress in the 900 block of L Street. A responding officer arrived to find the victim pinning down a suspect, identified as Thomas Robert Murphy, 43, of Springfield, authorities said. Police said a responding officer worked with the victim and then handcuffed Murphy. The officer saw that the victim was bleeding from one of his thighs and his lower torso, police said. SPD said the officer determined that the incident began when Murphy started yelling incoherently at the victim who was performing tree work in the area.
