Woman struck by train, pronounced dead near Junction City

A woman is dead after being struck by a train on the Union Pacific rail line just north of Junction City Friday morning.

According to Lane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived on the scene shortly after 11:30 a.m. where they learned a train traveling southbound along Union Pacific rail lines struck a woman who had been walking along the tracks.

An initial investigation revealed the woman had been facing away from the train as it approached. Train operators saw the woman and attempted to warn her to get off the tracks with the train horn but she did not respond, according to the sheriff’s office.

Train operators were not able to stop the train in time and the woman was struck. She was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

The woman had not been identified as of late Friday.
