North Eugene, Thurston crown individual champions at girls 6A/5A district wrestling meet

Thurston girls wrestling saw their hard work pay off as they brought home the team title at this year’s 6A/5A Special District 3 meet at North Eugene High School on Saturday night.

In the 23-team tournament, the Colts collected 298 points to Redmond’s 240 with North Medford finishing in third with 131 points.

Thurston’s Rubie Winterburn and Kristal Zamora took home gold at the event and qualified for the OSAA state meet, scheduled for Feb. 22-24 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Winterburn continued her stellar season, improving to 31-1 with a technical fall victory in 56 seconds against fellow Colts’ teammate Eily Asher at 100 pounds.

“It was different,” Winterburn said on facing her teammate. “But I was prepared to do it because I knew we were some of the bests in the bracket.”

With state competition two weeks away, Winterburn, a senior, said she will focus on “setting up shots and staying healthy” during practice.

Zamora, who is 32-1 this season, won at 140 by technical fall at 2:40 against Bend’s Jessie McIver.
