Eugene police arrest suspect in June 2023 assault case with help from Springfield police

EUGENE, Ore. – Eugene police recently made an arrest in a case from last year with help from Springfield Police officers. EPD officials said they arrested Zeke Richard Schmidt, 48, over the weekend and faces charges of first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon for an incident that happened in June 2023. Police responded to East 2nd Avenue and Mill Street following a report of an injured 46-year-old man who was laying outside his RV after having been struck by an object, authorities said. Police said the victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment but no suspect was found at the time following a search of the area by detectives and K9s. Schmidt was later identified as a suspect but wasn’t located until shortly after 1 a.m. on February 10, authorities said. EPD officials said that a Springfield police officer stopped him as he was walking on Pheasant Boulevard and Oakdale Avenue and then contacted Eugene police, who made the arrest.
