Bulldog girls miss qualifying for state

The Culver Bulldog girls had a tough time at the Special District 2 Regional Tournament at Cottage Grove, held Feb. 16 and 17.

The Bulldogs finished with 25 team points, 26th out of 48 teams scheduled to participate. Sweet Home won the tournament with 208 points, easily outpacing runner-up Oakridge with 122.

Sophomore Kaira Schjoll, wrestling at 130, led the way for Culver with a sixth-place finish. She received a bye then pinned Taylor Blank of Cottage Grove. But then she lost to Kaydence Johnson of Hidden Valley by a pin in the quarterfinals.

In the consolation side of the bracket, Schjoll picked up a pin over Mahlea Butler of Klamath Union, then won a 5-1 decision over Macy Carter of Grant Union. However, Schjoll then lost by fall to Madison Holder of Cottage Grove. In the fifth-place match, with a state tournament berth on the line, Schjoll lost another by pin, this one to Lydia Wright of Sweet Home.

Shelby Bunting, at 135, scored six team points for the Bulldogs. After receiving a bye, she beat Rylie Worcester of Stayton via injury forfeit. But in the quarterfinals, she lost to Jade Seymour of La Pine in a fast pin, then battled Ashlynn Anderson of Oakridge before losing by pin.
