Creswell lights up Fourth of July with classic Americana

Creswell kicks off the Fourth of July each year with its iconic celebration. Not only is the parade chock-full of participants like local fire departments, the Lane County Sheriff’s horseback Mounted Posse, vintage cars, bubble blowers and candy tossers, but the event as a whole has food trucks, vendors, live music and plenty of space in Harry Holt Memorial Park for the whole family to celebrate.

Camping chairs dotted the sidewalks around the parade route hours before the event began. Celebrating not only the 4th of July but also his birthday was Carl Sturges, his wife Ruth Sturges and their Shetland Sheep Dogs, Skye and Breagh.

“It’s a great day to have a birthday — I always get it off (of work),” Carl Sturges said.

Ruth Sturges said they enjoy small-town parades because they offer “such a wonderful slice of life” with good community connections and lively entertainment. After they attend their first Creswell parade, the duo said they plan to attend the Eugene Emeralds’ baseball game.

“(We’re having) a great Americana day. Baseball, a parade, it’s a nice hot day and we’ve got the dogs,” Ruth Sturges said. “It’s all good.”
