EUGENE, Ore. – Police and fire personnel responded to multiple fires at Skinner Butte on Sunday afternoon, according to the Eugene Police Department. EPD officials said that Eugene Springfield Fire and EPD officers responded at 1:03 p.m. on September 8 to reports of several small fires in the area around Skinner Butte. The first incident was a fire that started when a man reportedly was cooking near the river north of the Skinner Butte park, police said. Authorities said that ESF officials asked the man to put the fire out. An hour later, firefighters responded to a small brush fire near the peak of Skinner Butte alongside the Riverplay playground and riverbank path, Eugene police said. Police officials said there was no evidence that any substances were used to promote the fire’s spread. As firefighters responded to this incident, a third fire was reported on the north side of Skinner Butte in which a circular area was burned near the base of a tree, police said. Authorities said that bystanders in the area reported seeing a white man in his 60s with grey hair who was smoking a cigarette in the area but also said that no one had seen him start the fire.
