Teens charged in connection with shooting death of 16-year-old in Eugene

Two teenagers who police allege were involved in the July 13 shooting death of 16-year-old Fernando Aguirre are in custody and have each been charged with one count of unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm, according to court filings.

Both Athel Morgan, 19, and Jayson Blackwell, 18, were present at the scene of Aguirre’s shooting, the court filings allege.

Court documents reveal what may have happened the night of Aguirre’s death

According to court records, a witness told police he and another teen were acting as doormen at Blackwell’s East 14th Avenue apartment, checking identification and allowing entry into a party.

A group, allegedly known as the “12th Street Kids,” showed up to the party and were denied access by the doormen. Blackwell and Morgan met with the group and told them they were not welcome and needed to leave. A witness told police this group was known to cause trouble and was not welcome at the party.

Court documents allege Aguirre, who was with the 12th Street Kids, took a few steps back and seemed to comply with the request to leave, but a member of his group, Christopher Lekoff, 18, pulled out a gun as an argument escalated and pointed it at Blackwell and Morgan.
