Injuries reported, residents displaced after fire at affordable housing project in Eugene

Multiple residents at the Oakwood Manor Affordable Housing Complex near Oak Patch Road and 18th Ave. in southwest Eugene have been displaced after a fire erupted at the apartments early Friday morning.

According to the Eugene-Springfield Fire Department, firefighters arrived on the scene of a two-alarm fire just before 6:30 a.m. where they found a “heavy fire from the rear end of the building on the second floor.”

While fire crews held the main body of the fire to the primary apartment, a search of the complex found no fire victims and all units were safely evacuated.

Eight apartments and 10 people were impacted.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County said in a news release Friday that some affected residents may be able to return to their apartments while SVdP works to temporarily move others into motels for the duration of necessary remediation.

“SVdP opened the property’s community room for use by affected residents as the damage assessment takes place,” SVdP said. “Many impacted Oakwood Manor residents are elderly or have physical disabilities, and SVdP staff will make every effort to ensure that their temporary relocations go as smoothly as possible.”
