Firefighters battle rail car blaze near Highway 99 and Roosevelt Boulevard

EUGENE, Ore. – Fire crews responded on Sunday evening to a rail car that was engulfed in flames in the Highway 99 area, according to Eugene Springfield Fire authorities. ESF officials said that firefighters were dispatched shortly before 6 p.m. on October 13 to the rail yard in the Highway 99 area for a rail car fire. Callers reported to 911 dispatchers a large rail car fire near the intersection of Highway 99 and Roosevelt Boulevard, fire officials said. Authorities said that four engines, two trucks, and a medic unit responded to assist the hazardous materials crew that was on duty. Responding firefighters arrived to find a rail car carrying treated wooden power poles heavily involved in fire that was threatening a low-pressure rail car carrying denatured alcohol which carried a risk of potential flammability and explosion, ESF officials said. Fire authorities said that the fire was quickly contained to the original rail car with the tanker car suffering limited damage.
