Oregon State Hospital no longer at risk of losing Medicare, Medicaid certification

The Oregon State Hospital is no longer at risk of losing certification with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Oregon Health Authority said on Friday. The decision is based on more than a year of surveys following four patient safety incidents.

Why was the Oregon State Hospital at risk of losing certification?

CMS requires all organizations providing Medicare and Medicaid services meet specific conditions of participation in order to receive funding.

When a serious patient safety incident occurs, CMS surveyors will visit the hospital to examine both the event and general hospital safety, according to Amber Shoebridge, Oregon State Hospital’s spokesperson.

OSH had an initial visit in August 2023 after a patient escaped during a transfer. After the investigation, CMS issued a statement of deficiency. If the deficiency is severe, the hospital has 10 days to make a plan to correct the problem.

What does it mean that Oregon State Hospital is in compliance?

Shoebridge said after plans of correction are submitted and approved, surveyors return to resurvey the hospital.
