New Leader Emerges in Heisman Race, Favorites Fade After Subpar Weekends

At the sports betting site FanDuel, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel moved ahead of previous leaders Cam Ward and Austin Jeanty, awarded for leadership, consistency and career achievements.

Gabriel had the best weekend of any of the leading contenders. While Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Miami quarterback Cam Ward turned in so-so games, the 6th-year senior transfer from Oklahoma tossed three touchdown passes and ran for another in a 38-9 passing of #20 Illinois, a game in which the Ducks never trailed and were never threatened.

Gabriel was 18-26 for 291 yards and three touchdowns while averaging a gaudy 11.2 yards per attempt. The Ducks led 35-3 at the half. He also ran for a 7-yard touchdown, In Oregon’s 8-0, #1-ranked start he’s completing 76.2% of his passes, 5th in the country in passer rating, first in accuracy, 296.4 yards a game.
