Redmond hospital, Monroe sewage plant among Oregon DEQ fines in September

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality levied five fines in September, totaling $105,394.

Among those fined were a wood treater improperly managing hazardous waste, a metal recycler establishing a solid waste disposal site without a permit and a hospital not maintaining or testing an underground storage tank for fuel.

Recipients can appeal their fines by requesting a hearing within 20 days of receiving their penalty letter. DEQ sometimes reduces or eliminates fines after appeals.

They also may be able to resolve part of their penalty by completing or sponsoring an environmental improvement project instead of paying a fine.

Here are the citations:

Permapost Products Company , Hillsboro, $51,651: For improperly managing hazardous waste chemicals at its wood treating facility.

Radius Recycling (formerly Schnitzer Steel Co.), Portland, $29,580: For establishing and operating a solid waste disposal site and a waste tire storage site without permits.

St. Charles Medical Center – Redmond , $13,363: For failing to have adequate release detection equipment on piping for the underground storage tank system that holds fuel for emergency generators and boilers, and for failing to conduct required tests.
