A 42-year-old man was indicted Friday in Lane County Circuit Court on charges of robbing a Umpqua Bank branch in downtown Eugene, authorities said.
Thomas Bata, 42, was arrested Thursday after allegedly robbing the bank at the intersection of 7th Avenue and Olive Street. According to a news release from Eugene Police, officers responded to a report of a robbery at the bank just before 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
Police said Bata entered the bank and presented a note to a teller, threatening to use a firearm. After receiving cash, he fled the scene. Officers quickly canvassed the area and located Bata in a nearby parking lot. He surrendered to officers after a brief standoff, police said.
Bata was arraigned Friday on charges of second-degree robbery and second-degree theft for allegedly taking over $100 from the bank. He remained in custody at the Lane County Jail as of Friday afternoon.
