Educators and parents protest in Eugene to push back against Department of Education cuts

EUGENE, Ore. – On March 19, nationwide protests were held against the seemingly imminent dismantling of the Department of Education. In coordination with countrywide efforts, a rally was held in Eugene.

Concerned teachers, parents and students walked to Buena Vista Elementary on Wednesday morning, carrying signs and chanting. Magdalena Sloniger is a first grade teacher who helped lead the chants.

“We’re doing this because of the dismantling of the Department of Education. It takes away funding that is much needed in our schools for all children,” she said. “There is some misinformation out there saying the Department of Education is in charge of curriculum. That is simply not true. They are in charge of funding our most needy students and it is taking away from all students.”
