Travelers can still fly without REAL ID after deadline, at least for now. Here’s what to know

PORTLAND, Ore. — The deadline to have your license or state-level ID be REAL ID compliant is only a few weeks away. For years, officials have warned that after the deadline, May 7, people will not be able to enter federal facilities or travel on commercial domestic flights without it — though it turns out that second restriction won’t be closely enforced at first.

Kathleen McDonald, the Transportation Security Administration’s federal security director for Oregon, explained Monday that travelers will still be permitted to fly without a REAL ID after the deadline, but those who use a non-compliant ID can expect delays at security checkpoints.

“The length of that delay is really determined based on the number of other travelers who don’t have a REAL ID compliant credential or other form of acceptable government ID,” McDonald said at a press conference Monday morning…
