Lane County man sentenced to 75 months for rest area car theft incident

EUGENE, Ore. – Donald Wayne Johnson has been sentenced to 75 months in prison without the possibility of early release for a 2022 kidnapping incident, according to the Lane County District Attorney’s Office.

The Lane County DA’s Office said that the sentencing follows his March 12 conviction for kidnapping, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and assault. The crimes occurred on September 20, 2022, when Johnson stole a vehicle at the Gettings Creek Rest Area near Saginaw, the DA’s office said. Officials with the district attorney’s office said that the theft turned violent when Johnson elbowed a woman in the passenger seat as he attempted to drive away, and the woman’s cries for help prompted her husband and a bystander to intervene. The husband managed to stop the vehicle by diving through the window and restraining Johnson, who was later arrested by Oregon State Police troopers, the DA’s office said.
