EUGENE, Ore. — As demand for affordable housing continues to surpass supply in Eugene, one nonprofit is offering a unique solution. SquareOne Villages is challenging the traditional model of subsidized housing by creating “permanently affordable, resident-owned communities” designed for people living on fixed or very low incomes.
Jose Ambrocio never imagined he would be raising his daughter alone. After his wife passed away two years ago, this single father on a fixed income struggled to make ends meet. Ambrocio is now one of 70 residents living at Peace Village—an affordable housing co-op built by SquareOne Villages.
Jose shared, “It’s been really great. You know, we have a routine going on now, and she understands that this is home. This is a place where she gets to grow up.” He added, “I can stay here for as long as I need to, and I’m really grateful for that.”…
