The future of Yujin Gakuen Japanese Immersion Elementary is once again in the air as the community awaits a decision from district leadership.
Eugene School District 4J held a community meeting at the district office April 24, led by Interim Superintendent Colt Gill and Chief of Staff Carmen Xiomara Urbina. The meeting precedes a decision on YG’s fate, coming in the next week. YG has been housed temporarily at the Willard Swing School Site since the fall of 2024. The decision Gill faces will determine both the future of the K-5 YG school itself and the continued Japanese Immersion program from grades 6-12.
The evening’s session was intended to answer questions and begin receiving feedback on three feasible options that Gill presented:
- Option 1: Continue as is, meaning K-5 would remain at Willard Swing Site and 6-12 programs would remain in North Region at Kelly Middle and North Eugene High.
- Option 2: YG K-5 returns to Kelly Middle School, keeping YG in the North Region.
- Option 3: YG K-5 remains at Willard and 6-12 programs transition to South Region, possibly connecting to International High School at South Eugene.
Gill explained that these are the only options the district can afford…
