SUB warns customers of potential scammers following scam call

SPRINGFIELD, Ore.– The Springfield Utility Board said a wave of scam calls is making its way through their customer base. A customer was told they could negotiate a better utility deal if they met an unknown individual inside their own home.

Meredith Clark is the Community Relations Manager for SUB and made a post on social media alerting SUB customers to the latest scam attempt. Clark said this particular scam was odd because the caller wanted to meet the customer at their home to discuss a possible utility rate change.

“The call came from someone who said they wanted to set up an in-home appointment with the customer and talk about lowering their rates,” Clark said. “That’s very unusual, and we want emphasize to our customers we do not initiate any kind of call. If the customer wants to have consultation, they call us.”

Clark said that SUB would never discuss rates inside a customer’s home, but instead it would be done per the customer’s request. Fortunately, the SUB customer was able to recognize that they were likely being scammed and alerted SUB staff…
