University of Oregon student worker strike impacts scheduled Street Faire

EUGENE, Ore.– Right now, striking University of Oregon student workers are walking the picket line for better wages and protocols. However, the strike is causing disruptions to popular events on campus.

Sarah Bathke is the Student Communications assistant for the union. Bathke said they strongly believe that their demands are not outside the realm of possibility.

“These are not unreasonable demands. Grievance and arbitration protect student workers from sexual harassment and discrimination on campus,” Bathke said. “We still have hundreds of testimonies from student workers across this campus that have faced that in the work place and the university does not want us to be able to protect ourselves, and will not agree to that.”

In addition, workers are determined to see improved wages, as they say wages have not kept up with the cost of living. Bathke said that like many student workers across the state and the country, the cost of living has skyrocketed too much to be for current wages to handle…
