Eugene’s Sports Car Shop Targeted in Early Morning Arson; Suspect Darren Martin Rasmussen Charged

On Sunday, a man set a dumpster on fire under the south overhang of the Sports Car Shop in Eugene, causing damage to the building and a nearby vehicle, police say. According to an Eugene Police report, local fire department personnel were able to extinguish the smoldering remains of the fire, which had scorched a dumpster and left the business wall covered with soot. There was potential damage to electrical wiring, and a black 2020 Land Rover EVOC was exposed to heat due to the blaze. The incident at 288 W 6th Avenue was captured by surveillance footage, which later assisted in the suspect’s identification.

Surveillance video pinpointed the timing of the incident at approximately 5:27 AM, showing the man walking east on W. 6th Alley before digging through and igniting the dumpster with cardboard he found inside, then departing from the scene. After almost six hours, at around 11:50 AM, an officer located and apprehended the suspect on W. 11th Avenue by Hayes Street, according to the Eugene Police Department’s official report.
