It’ll soon be 50 years since the night American running icon, Oregon Duck legend and Hayward Field fan favorite Steve Prefontaine crashed his gold MGB convertible on Skyline Boulevard and died at 24.

The fatal accident on May 30, 1975, was the “End of an era,” proclaimed the headline in The Register-Guard, as the community woke to the shocking news that their charismatic, rebellious and fiercely competitive hero was gone.
