Garment workers hold renaming ceremony at Hayward Field to challenge Nike

EUGENE, Ore. – As athletes competed at the OSAA State Track & Field Championships inside Hayward Field on Thursday morning, another group gathered just outside the stadium, with a message directed at one of Oregon’s most powerful brands.

Three young garment worker activists from Indonesia traveled more than 8,000 miles to Eugene as part of a national campaign aimed at Nike. They held a symbolic renaming ceremony at Hayward Field, calling the stadium “Hidup Buruh,” which translates to “Long Live the Workers.”

“We’re here to rename Hayward Field ‘Hidup Buruh,’ which means long live the workers in Indonesia,” Gonzalo Bustamante Moya, Vice President of Political Education for the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation at the University of Oregon said…
